  • How to downgrade HD project to SD?

Posted by Roy Messinger on May 24, 2009 at 5:55 am

    Hi,
I’ve received an HD project from a good friend of mine. The problem is this project is a full HD. It has many precomposing comps, which are HD also.
How do I downgrade it to a regular SD composition?
I tried to make the main comp an SD, it worked, but it messed up the pre-composed comps, which haven’t change.
Is there any way doing that?
    Thx,
    Roy

i’ve had to do this before on my own projects because a client wanted something a different res, the solutio was to go through each individual comp and put in the proper comp settings. then of course doing the same for each layer that needs it as well.. it’s meticulous and i hate doing it – i know of no other way. you might even end up having to change particle sizes, velocities, camera positions, depth etc.. depending on the project

the shortcuts might help out (ctrl+k or command+k for comp settings… ctrl+shift+y or command+shift+y for layer settings)

Why not just make any changes you need to make in the HD project, render that out, then drop the rendered file into an SD comp and render that one out? Or, after you’ve rendered out the HD comp, export it for SD in Quicktime Pro or MPEG Streamclip.

haha yes that would be much easier – i see i was thinking of the other way around in which you would have to render from the original project file.

In fact, you don’t even need to do a double render if you don’t want to…

Drop the main comp (the one you render from that contains everything else) into a new SD comp (which will only have this one layer) and then scale it to fit. Saves you a render step and means that even when you make changes you can just rerender this comp and it all stays up to date.

    Sounds great!
    I’ll check it out.

Ya the reason I suggested rendering out the comp as HD, then rendering that was that he said when he took the HD comp and dropped it in an SD, it messed up the precomps. If it doesn’t mess up the precomps then the one render method is the way to go.
