Vegas 10 doing what it wants (not what I want!)
Posted by Kelly Griffin on October 10, 2011 at 7:59 pmI have a 15, 30 and 60-second spot I finished over the weekend. Everything was peachy as of yesterday afternoon.
Today, when I opened Vegas:
(1) My WAV music track is still titled the same but it’s now playing audio from some random, unused project footage.
(2) My closing scene is still titled the same but now there’s completely different footage being displayed with completely different audio.
I have already rebuilt the problem areas by copying and pasting elements from intact (similar) spots, but just when I think I’ve fixed one thing I’ll zoom out of the timeline and discover the thing I just fixed is using the wrong footage again!!
What on earth could be going wrong?! I’m on Vegas Pro10.0e (Build 738) 64-bit
I hope someone can get me out of this mess…

October 10, 2011 at 9:18 pmThat is indeed weird and very annoying. Try renaming that
project file while saving it in another location. Restart
your system, then see if the oddity continues when opened

October 10, 2011 at 10:30 pmI have never seen Vegas “lose” an event like this. Something must be modifying the underlying file that the .veg file is referencing. For an exhaustive list:
1. open your “good” .veg
2. press alt-F6
3. from drop list, pick Show Events
4. click the top left corner (select all)
5. ctrl-c
6. open excel
7. ctrl-v
8. in excel, Format->Column->Auto Fit SelectionYou can repeat the process for the “bad” .veg file but put the data into a different worksheet.
For those bad events, find the event by searching in good worksheet based on Track (col A), Active Take Name (col F), Take Start (col G). Take note of the File Path (col J).
Now find the exact same event in the “bad” worksheet.
If the File Paths are the same, then something is happening to that file(s) between your Vegas File Close and File (re)Open.

October 10, 2011 at 11:29 pmHey Tyson–
I started through your instructions and got as far as “Alt-F6”, which didn’t do anything. What’s that supposed to do?

October 11, 2011 at 1:13 amOkay, Tyson, I got the “good” and “bad” spreadsheets, and I found the bad files and their paths. So, now what do I do? 🙂
For example, I see my music file in column F with its correct name, and I see that its filename is one of the MXF files from elsewhere in the project (the music file is a WAV file from an altogether different part of the file system).
Now that I see the issue, how do I fix it?
THANK YOU!

I have had similar things happen to me, unfortunately. I would edit a project and everything was OK until I restarted the PC or (in my case) dismounted and remounted the drive.
I ended up having to render out the edit as an m2t file (after fixing it up), with and without the audio.
I never got to find what was causing it. It happened in 2 consecutive projects, both weddings, always at the end of a massive edit, and just before the deadline was due :-). I was using 10c at the time. In both cases, I was using nested veg files. On projects since then, I have not had cause for that, and the problem has not recurred.
My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

October 11, 2011 at 2:37 amYou’re saying that for a given event, good.FilePath and bad.FilePath are different? That is very strange. First thing, do you have the backup file available? Given: MyProject.veg, look for: MyProject.veg.bak
If you have it, rename MyProject.veg.bak to (eg) MyProject2.veg. Open it, is it OK?
If not, then you have to repair the original MyProject.veg …If you know where the “good” file is (eg, your .wav file) on your HD:
1. select the bad Media from the Media Pool
2. R-Click, Replace
3. Find the correct fileVegas should replace that .MXF with the .wav you select.

October 11, 2011 at 3:59 amThis is a known issue within SCS. Unfortunately there’s no commonality of cause and no one can reproduce it. (If they could reproduce it, SCS would fix it). Fortunately, it’s rare.
Personally, I think it’s a Windows issue since a similar problem shows up in other Windows programs.
File a bug report, but don’t expect a quick fix.
In the meanwhile, make frequent backups of the project veg file.

October 11, 2011 at 4:23 amOkay, so here’s what I’m experiencing:
(1) I put a 30-sec WAV music file on the timeline from my “keeper” folder for ongoing projects. Use it all the time.
(2) All is well. Save the VEG. Close Vegas.
(3) Launch Vegas, open the VEG and my WAV music file displays the correct name on the timeline but the timeline is playing audio from an MXF file that is from a take I’m not even using. I went to do the “replace” thing and the file I want to replace isn’t even part of the project.
(4) Likewise, there are two other video events that keep getting replaced in the same manner as above. I’ve saved copies in different places on my file system and it all turns to crap as soon as I open the file again. The rest of the spot is fine– only these two video events and three audio events (two wrong picture with sound, plus music track that’s hosed) are affected by whatever the hell’s going on.
If anyone has any idea what’s happening to me I’d sure like to know how to deal with this. I got zero done today dealing with this.
Thanks,
–Kelly
