September 26, 2011 at 8:47 pmPossible problems are a bad firewire cable (try a new one), bad firewire port on computer or camcorder (try another camera/computer), a recent windows update.

September 27, 2011 at 2:42 pmDoes Windows ask what you want to do with your camera when you turn it on while it is connected to your computer? Mine always does, and the message tells me that the connection is working properly.

September 27, 2011 at 10:18 pmno, it doesn’t. My computer, by the way, is just a few months old. Brand new. I am devastated! Continuous message on capture.. NO device detected. I’ve tried every maneuver.. putting in brand new fire wire. The adapter that connects between camera and power, is a just a few month old. I tried turning camera off and then on… moved it to VCR,, NOthing works..

September 28, 2011 at 1:21 amThere have been several reports about firewire issues with Windows 7.
Here’s a suggestion to try from a user on another Vegas forum.•Go to Device Manager and click on IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers
•Click on the device listed underneath this heading. In my case it was NEC 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller
•Right click this device and select ‘update driver software’ from the shortcut menu
•Then select the option ‘browse my computer for driver software’
•Then select the option ‘let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer’
•This then gave me three drivers to pick from (make sure the’show compatible hardware’ checkbox is ticked
•Select the driver named ‘1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)’
•Install driver. -

September 28, 2011 at 4:39 amMy daughter and followed the steps to completion.. and it didn’t correct the capture problem.. I have no idea what is going on . I did check my Dell for detection of any problems.. and it did say changes is devices were not picked up.. so something systemically is wrong with my brand new Dell. I use my Imac downstairs for SKYPING lessons only. This whole Vegas thing is messing things up with my vids.

September 28, 2011 at 2:12 pmIf Windows does not detect the camera, then Windows is not seeing it and Vegas cannot see it or capture from it. My guess is a blown firewire port on the camera, the computer, or any adaptor which is between the camera and computer. This usually happens when a firewire cable is plugged into a device which is powered on. Everything (camera, computer, etc) should be turned off when plugging in the cable. A blown port is especially likely since everything has worked well before.
I would begin by connecting a different camera which is known to work using a new firewire cable to the computer. If Windows detects that camera, then the computer’s firewire port is OK. Similarly test all other ports in the chain.

September 28, 2011 at 3:33 pmIf your other computer has a firewire port, you could try plugging it in and seeing if it is detecting the camera. If not, a blown firewire board in the camera could be the issue. That caused a lot of grief for Sony FX1 users back in 2005, which made me go out and buy a Kramer DV line protector.
If you have blown the firewire board in the camera, and it is still under warranty, you could try and get it repaired for free, otherwise a new internal board for the camera could be on the cards. They are not cheap because of the labour that is involved in replacing them.
I don’t believe your firewire port on the laptop is damaged, and neither is Vegas. You can check the status of the firewire port in Windows device manager.
My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6
