  • full side by side 3D rendering in Vegas…it doesn’t work

Posted by Hans Castrop on September 21, 2011 at 9:40 am

    Hi
I’m using sony HDR TD10E camera and the files it produces are MVC files. on harddisk it’s .m2ts.
I want the best 3D viewing quality so I choose side by side full in Vegas for export. All I get is a strange 1920×1080 file with a lot of black on top and bottom. so 2 images that are smaller than half sbs. Am I overlooking something?
    thanks
    Hanks

    Hi Bruce
    thanks for the answer.
I did watch the tut but it didn’t mention specificly the full side by side export. Its in Vegas as export possibility but it doesn’t export anything usefull. As far as I can tell. I want to play the file with Sony Playstation 3, so the whole workflow is with sony software and equipment.

    Hi again Hans,

Both Movie Studio & Pro will render for the Playstation Portable, but Sony Playstation has a new firmware update as of September 20th. That may solve the issue.

Make sure you render side-by-side half, not full.

Since I don’t have the Studio version (I use Pro), you’ll have to experiment, take the rendered file to DVD Architect and burn from there. Keep experimenting. When you get your project to work on your Playstation…..PLEASE, come back to this forum and inform via a post so others can benefit from your experience.

    Hi Bruce,
thanks for your answer..but you’ve got my question backwards. My point is: I can make 3D and view it side by side (half). no problem there. I’ve got several workflows I’ll share in a minute. My question is: Vegas has the option to export side by side FULL. but the resulting file can’t be used. Not in any application or hardware. It’s a wrong output. it’s 1920 wide and 1080 high with a lot of black on top and underneath. Vegas has a bug there I’m afraid. But maybe not..that’s why I have this question. I hope anyone has the answer and tells me (us).

As my workflow is concerned: I haven’t done much editing yet, but did quite a lot of tests and this has been working for me:
import in Vegas the MVC files. (in case of HDR TD10 that’s .mts or m2ts).
edit in Vegas, add titles etc. Export a file via Project>render as.
choose Sony AVCHD 1920x 1080-50i 5.1Surround. Open çustomize Template. go to Project tab and Stereoscopic 3D mode: side by side (half). Close the window and Render. You will get a .m2ts file that can be played on playstation3 in side by side mode. On your 3D TV you’ve got to make the settings right of course of it doesn’t recognize the side by side. That’s it. Works fine for me. Only it’s half the quality our camera TD10 gives us. So I’m hoping for a “full” solution.
    Regards
    Hans

    Hi Hans

that is not a bug its just what side by side half and full is,

side by side full shows two images next to each other in full, which leads to bars top and bottom due to the aspect ratio etc when you put the images on top of each other in 3D

side by side half streaches the images to fill that unused space, but when you translate this back to a 3D monitor it will translate back to norm,

meaning that side by side half actually makes use of more resolution than the “full” option, you will normally loose half resolution in 3D anyways “unless doing frame sequential stuff,” as you are displaying two images within a 1080 file, to display HD in each eye on a side by side file you would probally have to render out close to 4k

hope this sheads some light on your confusion,

have to say that most high end stuff made in 3D is done side by side half 1080p and the lost resolution is not missed,

I’m glad somebody else experiences the same problem as I do, or confusion if I’m to take Matt’s word for it.

What I’m looking for is a way to export the left and the right eye view of a Stereoscopic 3D project in full HD resolution. Preferably in somewhat the same container as what the TD10 delivers (two streams in the same video file). Or, what I would have expected from the Side-by-side Full project setting, as a file with two full 1920×1080 frames next to each other. The result would be a video file with a width of 3840px.

Or just two separate video files, that’d be sort-of fine as well. But this I can achieve by rendering left-eye first and right-eye next. Would like it in one pass though.

As for displaying; I’d like let the playback setup (TV, YouTube, other software) figure out what to do.
