  Stuttering Video on Timeline

  Hello, everyone. I’ve run into a little problem and decided to sign up here to see if I can get some answers. Here’s my situation: I’m making a short video highlighting a line of boxing gloves. The footage was recorded at the matches, from what I assume is a professional camera. The technical aspects of the clips are as follows.

  Format: ffdshow Video Codec
  Attributes: 704x362x24 (I believe they were upscaled?)
  Frame Rate: 29.970 (NTSC)
  Field Orde: None (Progressive Scan)
  Type: .AVI

  Now, the issue I’m having here is that when I try to put it on the timeline to preview it, it becomes terribly jumpy, and causes Vegas 10 to hang for a moment. The strange part is that it works just fine in the trimmer. No hanging, lagging, or anything. Although the audio stopped working just now for some reason.

  If I Selectively Pre-render or Build A Dynamic RAM preview, it will play the clips on the timeline alright. I don’t think it’s my PC because I’m currently running an i7 930 with 6GB of RAM.

  Any thoughts?

  Why are you using ffdshow? That’s an extra layer of software that redirects codecs and could be the source of your problem. I would uninstall ffdshow, find out what the “real” codec is and install that instead. Also make sure that you don’t have any codec-paks installed (like K-lite, etc.) because they can interfere with Vegas’ normal operation.

  Alternately, you can get ffdshow out of the picture without uninstalling it by using a utility like AviDemux to convert the footage to Motion-JPEG which Vegas should be able to edit easily. Here are the settings in AviDemux in case you want to use that:
