  • Fastest way to cut multiple frame-accurate scenes and join together.

    Hi guys,

I’ve hit an efficiency bottleneck WRT the above goal.

Let’s say I have a 3 hour video clip which I need to cut specific scenes from. At the moment, it’s an equal mix of viewing the video in real-time and scanning through the video using F3 and F9 to speed up or slow down playback. All the above is done using “Video Preview on External Monitor” button. This full-screen preview is quite important for me to look at small details in the picture in order for me to determine where to place markers with frame-accuracy.

Anyway, so let’s say I’m watching the video and I find a scene that I want to mark for later joining with other scenes. I’ll find the frame for the ‘in’ point, press ‘m’ on the keyboard, then ‘enter’ and that’s my first marker placed. Then I’ll find the ‘out’ point frame and do the same to place a marker. Then I’ll continue watching/scanning until I find the next scene that I want. All this while being blind to the timeline and using only the keyboard for speed.

At the end, I’ll have 70 or more markers represning 35 or more wanted scenes. Then, I’ll go through the slow process of creating ‘region’ markers between every two markers so I’ll have 35 or more regions representing 35 or more scenes. From here, is there a quick set of commands to select all regions and then have them joined together? Or is there a faster way for me to mark-out scenes that I want while maintaining full-screen video watching?

Really trying hard to get used to Vegas and I’ve halted on doing any futher ‘marking’ or editing until I streamline this editing process. Have at least a hundred or more videos which I’ll be looking to edit in a similar fashion. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Consider using commercial scripts. For example, Vegasaur Markers tool can do it with a single click. It will keep (or delete) all media that lies between each pair of markers. Thus, everything between markers 2 and 3, and between markers 4 and 5 (and so forth) will be deleted. In addition it will ripple the contents of the timeline after the removal.

You can also use VASST Ultimate S Lite or Ultimate S Pro to delete events between regions or markers with ripple (and a whole lot more). You might want to download the 15-day free trial and use it on your current project and see how you like it.

Here is a training video to show you all the capabilities of just the Markers tab which is one of 15 tabs of functionality in Ultimate S Pro:

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the input but I don’t think I can use the software. I’m using Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11, not Pro!

John, is there any chance of the software working with Platinum 11 anytime in the future? Or can I place the markers in Platinum 11, save as a project and then close Vegas and open the project using Ultimate S Lite/Pro only?

No, Movie Studio doesn’t support the Script API that both of these tools use so there is no way for us to make them work with the Movie Studio version of Vegas (Platinum or otherwise).

You could make a Product Suggestion to Sony to add the Script API in Movie Studio. Until then, you need Pro to use any Script plug-ins.
