Audio Settings?
Posted by William Van on August 7, 2011 at 9:36 amMy camera records AC-3 at 48khz but when I click “match media settings” under project properties then click the audio tab, it shows – Sample rate 44,100 – Bit depth 16. Why does it not say 48khz if my camera’s audio is 48khz?
The master audio track that I am importing is 44.1khz. The 48khz camera tracks will be muted before rendering so should project properties audio be at 44.1khz?
If I render to .m2ts the only audio setting is for AC-3 at 48khz.
I don’t like the idea of sample rate converting audio so the only other option I see is mp4. It allows you to choose 44.1khz and the bit rate. Is this mp3?
Finally, does YouTube recommend 44.1khz mp3 or 48khz AC-3 for best quality?
Thanks for any answers

You can if you want to but, as the bulk of my stuff ends up on DVD, I leave it at 48K.
“I don’t like the idea of sample rate converting audio…”
Why not? I’ve done this numerous times and never had any problems whatsoever.
My co-worker is a recording engineer/producer in his free time and, as such, has a very good ear when it comes to audio and he agrees with me.“Finally, does YouTube recommend 44.1khz mp3 or 48khz AC-3 for best quality?”
YouTube is going to resample it anyway.
Sony AVC is an often recommended preset for YouTube and it’s audio is at 48K. -

August 7, 2011 at 4:41 pmAll audio for video is 48K/16bit. This is what you should set your project properties to by default.

August 8, 2011 at 6:08 amWhenever I check project properties the default is 44.1 at 16 bit even after matching media properties
Mike Kujbida says Match Media Properties only effects video.
I had been rendering videos before I noticed this so it seems to work either way but I’ll set it to 48khz now.

Well, it can cause audible artifacts if not done properly especially if its done more than once on the same file. I use R8brain Pro if I need to do it.If my master audio track is 44.1khz and then I render at 48khz and then YouTube converts it back to 44.1khz then no tellin what it might sound like.
So if YouTube has a default sample rate then I want to upload my video at that sample rate.

This does not affect the rendering. If your video has 48K audio and your project is set to 44.1K and you render to 48K, Vegas will not dither because the audio is already at the correct bit-rate. The project properties are just for playback during editing. It makes no sense to dither during edit if your audio is 48K. Just set your project to 48K.

YouTube uses 44.1K. I send all of my videos there at 48K because my original recordings are at 48K and they sound fine once converted. I agree if your audio starts out as 44.1K there is no need to convert to 48K just to convert it back again.
Here is one of mine sent as 48K:

August 10, 2011 at 8:55 amThanks John,
If I want to keep my audio at 44.1khz for YouTube then the only template I see that lets me stay at 44.1khz is the Main Concept Mp4 template. It seems to automatically detect my video as 1440X1080 with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.3333 as a custom frame size.
In another thread you said
<“They recommend MainConcept AVC for Apple iPod type of renders. They recommend Sony AVC for AVCHD, Blu-ray, and Internet video.”>
Can I use the MainConcept template for YouTube since it allows me the 44.1khz sample rate and you said YouTube is at 44.1khz?
