Time/date effect
How would I recreate the time/date effect in this video, where the digits of the time/date change as they are wiped onto and off of the screen? The first example is at about 20-26 seconds in.

It is like they change the digit as it comes onto or off of the screen. Is there some way to do that without extensive keying?

Drop the text on the timeline, do a fade in and out on it and then drop the “Left-Right, Soft Edge” Linear Wipe transition on top of each fade.

OK, great!
But how do I get the digit that is being wiped to change into a different digit as the wipe scrolls over it?
It is really a nice, eye-catching effect.

That effect I’m not sure about.
I tried to download the clip so that I could take a closer look at it but didn’t have any success.

It looks like the digits are scrolling through numbers. Like before you see “5”, it goes through 1-4.
Nice effect but I can’t think how to do it without a lot of keyframes.

So once I create this effect in After Effects, do I then render it out to a lossless .avi file, and then bring it into Vegas on its own track?
And which type of lossless .avi is best?

I did it all in Vegas:

I used Photoshop to put each character on a separate layer, then drag the psd file to the Vegas Timeline across tracks. (I could as easily have done it with the character generator in Vegas). I enabled the Composite Level envelope on each track and initially set all tracks to zero. The Composite Level was brought up for three frames per letter, in sequence, finishing with the letter or number I wanted. I created a track group (Version 10 only) for each character in the final presentation and added a parent track for positioning. Select all tracks in all track groups and drag the end of the tracks to two-times the desired length.
Finally, I opened my demo project and embedded the veg file with the scrolling characters on the track above the background. Now I compressed the scrolling text by doing a CTRL-drag of the text track to the desired length.
The time compression makes the individual characters fly by faster, plus it gives me some flexibility in the final project.
This whole project took me about two hours, but a) I love a challenge, and b) I got faster as I progressed. Also, duplicating characters that I already keyframed (like the “1”‘s in 2011) only took a couple of minutes to duplicate and move.

Lossless = uncompressed (which means a potentially very large file).
