Proper settings for concert video project
Hello,
I am new to Sony Vegas Pro 10. I have recorded taped concert footage from a VCR via my Hauppauge HD PVR, it created a AVC .TS file, MediaInfo tells me the file is Interlaced-Top Field First (NTSC 29.970 fps).
I have added in several effects and credit rolls for the song titles, which are progressive frames. What would be the best properties AND rendering settings? I plan to make it into a standard DVD that will be playing on different TVs (both tube and LCDs).
I tried rendering out a small clip where the field order changed to lower, and it looked terrible. Do DVDs need to be lower field first? I thought about just rendering out as progressive, but I’m not sure how it would look? I am confused about the field order.
And would there be any good in going with 24fps (2-3 pullldown)?
I’ve spent a few hours reading the other posts, but I’m still unsure. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I would make your project properties match your media.
Then make sure your events are interpreting the media correctly (i.e., right-click them and select Properties and check the Media tab for the correct field order). Finally render using one of the DVD Architect MPEG2 templates. Don’t worry about field order. Vegas will take care of that for you if your project and media properties are set correctly.

Mike, not sure what ‘terrible’ means. Could you be more descriptive?
My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10 (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

Thanks for the help. It set the field to Upper and changed the Pixel aspect ratio to 0.8889.
I guess I messed up before with setting Lower field and 0.9091 pixel.
The video first looked blurry with interlace lines. All looks good now!
What happens if I add different interlace footage to the timeline where one clip has Upper field and another clip with Lower field?

As long as the media in the event shows the field order correctly (i.e., it matches what the media’s field order really is), Vegas will flip the fields as needed with no extra work from you. Changing the field order manually is not needed. Vegas is smart enough to handle this.
