AVCHD Edit
I’m working on editing AVCHD shot with Panasonic HC150, on Vegas 8c. The video was shot in 720/30. Playback is extremely choppy once added to the timeline. If I play in the window without putting on the timeline the footage looks fine. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!

Two things come to mind.
First, AVCHD requires bone-crushing brute processor power. Like a hex-core i7. Anything less is likely to have choppy timeline playback.
Second, Version 8 never really handled AVCHD very well. Version 10 has focused on improvements to the AVCHD experience.Steve Mann

Greg, upgrade to 10. I was not happy with even using 9. There were major improvements in 10 due to Sony finally supporting AVCHD on their cameras, (funny how that works). You don’t specify on your post or your profile what computer you are using to do this on. Steve is right that you might need to upgrade your system to drive AVCHD footage, even close to smoothly. I still struggle with it, as Vegas playback is very choppy even with the best video cards and tons of RAM. Its the achilles heel of the product, but I can get it to work well enough. Make sure your footage is on a drive other than the OS, and preferably eSata. 7200 rpm is recommended.

Thanks guys. My computer is Core 2 Duo, 3.ghz with 2GB RAM. Video card is GeForce 8400. I have 2 Seagate external drives that I edit to. I’ll have to double check the specs on those.

Make sure that your project properties match the properties of your AVCHD footage. That will give you the smoothest playback. Even so, Vegas Pro 10 handles AVCHD a lot better than 8.0c did. I would definitely download the trail of 10.0 and see if it helps. If it does, an upgrade is your best solution.

I highly recommend considering upgrading to a faster processor with more RAM. But also do what John recommends in the meantime.
