Best render settings needed ASAP!
Hi – I have a screening of my film on Friday and I had to revert back to my older version of Sony Vegas 7.0.
My original project is using MOV files – all uncompressed at 25FPS.
I need to render a high quality DVD version of the film as well as a high quality version for a laptop.
Please could someone suggest the best render settings for DVD (MPEG 2) and how to make it full 1920×1080 as opposed to 720×576?
And what settings I should tweak to make it full HD?
And should I render to WMV for the laptop version?
Please suggest anything! I rendered it MPEG2 720X576 and there seemed to be some ghosting which i’m going to work on tonight. Should I change seconds per keyframe etc?

If your DVD has to be a Video DVD to play in standalone hardware players (on TV sets) then you cannot render to HD. Just use the DVD Architect PAL Widescreen Video Stream preset for Mainconcept MPEG2 in Vegas to render the video, and then render the audio as AC3 format. These 2 files can be used in DVD Architect to create a video DVD.
If your source video is 25fps then there should be no ghosting/blending with the PAL presets.
An HD WMV file will probably take a bit of effort for a laptop to play back smoothly, but you can try it. Just use the WMV format HD 1080-25p preset.

Thanks for that info. There is one other slight issue – if it isn’t ghosting i’m experiencing what else could it be that causes a slight flicker of mostly moving images? Would this be due to source media being progressive / upper / lower?
Or would the deinterlace method on the PROJECT PROPERTIES have anything to do with that? (It’s set to blend fields and motion blur type is set to Gaussian).
It’s not a major issue but just when there’s fast movemement it seems a little bit strobe-y. ANy suggestions what I could do to improve this? Thanks

Re the strobing/ghosting, this is likely to be the result of the Blend Fields deinterlace method.
For scenes with fast motion, use the Interpolate method to deinterlace. That uses only one of the 2 fields for each frame so you get clean output with fast motion. The blend method simply blends together (merges) the 2 fields of the interlaced video to produce an output frame. Of course, with fast motion there is a bit of movement between the 2 fields so you get some ghosting.
The blend method usually gives better results than interpolate for low-motion footage, and it gives a higher resolution output because it’s using all of the input video data.

Can you change these settings for each individual clip or does it just apply to properties in which case it will change ALL the source media? My film is 30 minutes long and contains a mixture of both action and normal footage – what should I do? I noticed it on a dialogue scene where the character was moving left to right?

The deinterlace setting only applies to the whole project. It can’t be set for individual events.
Do you see this ghosting on the DVD renders (interlaced output) as well, or only the WMV (progressive output)?
