File conversion software for Vegas editing
Hi there
i work for a professional sports club and we have a lot of video in .VOB format. I need to convert this to a format which does not lose quality and i can work with in Sony Vegas HD Platinum 10.
Simply changing the extension to mpg does not work.
In the past when i have converted the file is stuttery and poor quality.
Can anyone recommend software and/or codecs that could do a good job?

Do you still have the DVD the .VOB files came from? I have renamed .VOB files and edited them fine in Vegas Pro.
Does Platinmum have the option to import files from disc? -
Yes i still have the .vob files – i’ve finished with theses ones but will have the same problem next season as well.
I renamed them but – and i think it’s because they are quite long (90mins+) – when i go to edit them in the preview window they are impossible to work with – the video and audio is out, the timing is all over the place, and it’s very difficult to move around in the video.
I’ve had another go and i can import the .vob file directly without having to rename but still the quality isn’t good. Will work with a few of the files and see what the end product looks like.

You are copying the .VOB files from the DVD to a different drive other that the C drive and changing the ext to mpg right?, Otherwise Vegas will try to edit as if the DVD rom was a drive. Been there, done that Veeery slo and you hear your DVD ROM spining. What are your PC specs? Also if the DVDs were copywrited or are Encrypted with anti piracy, You won’t be editing them Vegas.
You didn’t tell us if Platnum has the abillity to capture from disc. I’d hate to think your only option is to capture analog from the DVD. -
I think i have been trying to edit form the c drive, but have got a large external drive which i will use in future.
The PC is grunty enough – intel core i7, quad core cpu
DVDs aren’t copyrighted or encrypted – we have all rights to use them/edit them.
After mucking around i have found that i can import media direct from the disc in Platinum. So it maybe that i copy the .vob files to the external hard drive, import into Vegas from there and try and do the editing that way.

If you are still looking for conversion software you might try VOB2MPG. A conversion utility I use a lot.
They offer a free version for a trial, but the pro version runs much faster and is very affordable.
The software will export a mpg as a single file. Sony’s DVD import will break up the mpg file at chapter points.
