Saving settings in pan/crop tool – key-frames too??
Hi Guys and Gals,
I have been producing some cooking shows recently and have one or two places in the project timelines where I need to use the pan/crop tool to position and animate a lower-third background to a title. This animation usually takes a set formation, but has different durations.
It would be such a time saver if I could save these settings and animations.
I have attempted many times to save the key-frames and settings, but when I recall them, only one of the settings is reloaded. No key-frames are listed on the pan/crop timeline and the setting that is loaded is not always the first one.
I have tried all sorts of different methods of saving (not that there are many), with zero success.
I know that settings can be saved, but I’m beginning to doubt if the key-frames can be.
Is it something I’m doing wrong, or should this be an item to put on the wish-list?

Vegas allows you to save several fx keyframes as a plug-in chain, but unfortunately, you can not save multiple Pan/Crop keyframes as a preset (similar to plug-in chains). Only one Pan/Crop keyframe can be saved as a preset. So, you can not do it in Vegas without extra tools, such as Pan/Crop Assistant, which allows you to save all Pan/Crop settings of a selected event (including all keyframes and animations) as a custom preset that can be re-used for other projects.

Bruce, save the lower third animation as a veg file, import it and modify as needed using the option to right-click the veg file and open it.
I do a few shows each year and do exactly this with several title sequences.

If you save the Pan/Crop settings as an FX Package (even thought there is only one plug-in in the chain) it will save all of your animation keyframes with it. I use this all the time to save Boris BCC7 animations.

I liked your suggestion Mike and I think it might work for me. I haven’t used that function before and would like to give it a try. It could save some time in other areas as well!
John, you mentioned saving it as an FX Package…but I don’t seem to be able to find how to save the Pan/Crop function in Video FX. Could you explain a little further please? I have tried opening up the track FX and saving it there, but NFL. I can’t find a pan/crop plug-in in video FX – only a cookie cutter which unfortunately doesn’t serve my purpose.
Am I missing something?

Nope. I missed that you were specifically talking about Pan/Crop. So the FX Package won’t work for you. (sorry)
