My computer is about 6 months old, and is reasonably powerful. It has an ASUS motherboard with integrated audio. The audio works fine, but does not have the audio capabilities I want. I am looking for an outboard capability (to avoid the noise which an internal adapter card would encounter) which can replace the integrated audio. I want good quality, 24 bit sound with a 96k sampling capability, and 5.1 playback support. Any suggestions about what can deliver this?

The computer is running Win 7 64bit, and Vegas 10c 64bit.

I don’t know how deep your pockets are but the ProFire 610 is the successor to the M-Audio FireWire 410 which I have and love.

I have the M-Audio FireWire 410 also and I can highly recommend the ProFire 610. You might also want to investigate other firewire solutions from Echo Audio or PreSonus. Don’t skimp on an audio interface. This is one area where you get what you pay for.

Can you guys briefly describe how the m-audio devices connect to the speakers? Is it a simple adapter with channels assigned within the driver?

In my case, I bought a full M-Audio 5.1 speaker set (not being made/sold any more unfortunately).
The line outs of the 410 plugged into the subwoofer which fed all the other speakers.
Channels are assigned in the Vegas audio tab.

Same here. I have the M-Audio Studiophile LX4 2.1 System + LX4 5.1 Expander System (not sold anymore).
