So, I’m doing some editing from a shoot produced by someone other than me. That being the case, there is some general subtle white noise in the audio. Generally, playing with the eq can do wonders, but not in this case.

For cost reasons, I’ve been looking at both the Sony and Acon noise reduction plugins. They both have their subtle good points and bad points.

The Sony, if pushed too far, will create annoying artifacts. But reduces the noise quite well. The Acon seems to be more forgiving with the artifacts, but doesn’t remove as much noise as the Sony. So I played around with doing multiple passes, and that seemed to help a bit too.

My question is, are there any other pros/cons to each of these plugins before I purchase?

The ones that sample a section of just the noise seem to work the best in my opinion. That old Cool Edit Pro 1 had a noise reduction filter that worked fantastic. I need to scrounge through my big box of old discs and see if I can find it.

I agree with Roger, iZotope RX2 is an outstanding tool suite for all kinds of noise reduction. It’s my “go to” tool of choice. If you can’t afford that, take a look and BIAS Sound Soap 2. It should remove broadband noise like you’re describing very well and is easy on the wallet.

    Another vote for iZotope.
The product is almost magic at times when you hear what you can do with it 🙂
