Activity Forums VEGAS Pro Frame Rate and DVD Burning Dilemma

    Hi everyone.

I recently enquired about a frame rate issue over on the Canon EOS DSLR forum, which expanded to the point where I have realised the problem seems more appropriately discussed here.

I have a short film about 95% shot at 24p (23.976 fps), but when I burn a DVD in Sony Vegas, having chosen the 24p option, I get abysmal results.

This is a screen shot of a project, before commencing the burn, with a piece of raw panning footage. Notice the frame rate ‘23.976p’.

I then go through the menus to burn a DVD, in which I am only allowed to select one of three pre-set frame rate options: 24p, 50i and 60i; So I choose 24p and begin the burning process.

As the video renders I am given this preview. Notice the frame rate ‘24.000p’.

As you can see, there is a significantly bad interlacing of some sort, frames overlaying with neighbouring frames, and it is extremely frustrating as I have no idea how to correct this. It isn’t just the preview either – it shows on other DVD players.

I have had slightly better results burning at 60i, but aren’t all motion picture DVD’s supposed to be 23.976p?

I can’t help but think there is some obvious flaw and I’m going to look like an absolute fool…

Is there a way to correct this awful problem and burn 24p (and I mean 23.976p) DVDs in Vegas?

I’d appreciate any help or suggestions!

There’s your problem right there. The project should be 23.976 and not 24.000. That is what’s messing things up.

What “menus to burn to DVD” are you using?

You should go to File | Render As… then select MainConcept MPEG2 with the DVD Architect 24p NTSC Widescreen video stream template. Then go back and do the same for the audio using the Dolby Digital AC-3 Pro codec and the Stereo DVD template. Use this video and audio file to author your DVD in DVD Architect.

    Ah!!!

I was using Tools > Burn Disc > DVD… in Sony Vegas 10.

[John Rofrano] “The project should be 23.976 and not 24.000”
The project was 23.976 but when it rendered to burn the DVD it would keep changing to 24.000. I knew it was that all along! It’s so great to have a pro back me up!

Thanks very much for this, I never thought of doing that at all.
