I’m having a few problems wrapping my head round 16:9 footage at the moment, I hope someone can steer me on the right direction!

I shot a short using the sony Z1 and now have the interesting decision to either edit it as DV or HDV. I’ve got it digitised as 16:9 DV in Premiere Pro, but whenever I import it into AE6.0 its displayed as 4:3. If however I change the compostiion settings to 16:9 the image doesn’t fill the screen and has to be stretched to make it fit, alternatively I can reinterpret the footage as 16:9 and it appears okay.

But why is it not recognising it as 16:9 footage and exporting it that way? I’m really worried that I’m stretching the image and losing quality in AE which is the last thing I want.

HDV also seems like a dead loss AE wise, although did eventually manage to get some footage from PP1.51 in after much effort and export it to DVD successfully.

    Any thoughts?

    David-

Was this footage shot as 16:9 anamorphic (720×480 1.2 Pixel Aspect Ratio)? Or was this shot in 16:9 letterbox? There is a BIG difference. Does the Z1 capture in HDV? I didn’t know that.

Sorry I’m not very smart – of course the Z1 captures in HDV!

Check your pixel aspect ratio… I bet if you switch aspect to 1:1 in the comp settings, the video is going to properly fit in the preview that AE is supplying. This is an easy thing to forget (I constantly do) when CHANGING comp settings as opposed to creating a new comp from the presets. Changing the aspect ofcourse, depends entirely on what you ultimately need to do with the footage.
