avi problems
Two issues:
I have avi files created by Camtasia using their CODEC which I have installed. I can play the files in WinMediaPlayer – and also convert them to mpg or wma with a video converter program.
Problem 1: Vegas Pro 9 with the latest update only opens the audio part of the file. I’ve seen this before – but how can a computer have a CODEC that other programs can use – but not Vegas?
Problem 2: I need to create DVD’s with the files – but they expand by 10 times in DVD Architect 5.0. For example, I have a 72Mb uncompressed avi file, that DVD Arch. estimates to take 800Gb on the DVD. However, a 139Mb MPEG II file, does not inflate at all. The end result is that I only end up with a capacity of about 60 minutes available on a DVD, rather than 120.

Are you using the 64-bit version of Vegas Pro 9? if yes, you will also need the 64-bit version of the Camtasia codec which only comes with Camtasia 7. Otherwise use the 32-bit version of Vegas Pro.

The normal capacity for a DVD is only 80 minutes not 120 unless you lower the bit-rate. It is odd that the AVI file is causing problems. I would render the AVI file to MPEG2 in Vegas and not have DVD Architect encode it at all.

Yes, I’m using 64-bit. I don’t have Camtasia. However, the codec is available – and it worked. Thanks so much.
And, yes, I was going to re-encode the AVI files in Vegas – but obviously, I couldn’t.
But why would DVD Arch. inflate an AVI 10x? That just seems crazy.
Before this I tried Any Video Converter – and even with the best setting I could find – it introduced unacceptable noise into the audio – and reduced the video quality too much.
I have not done much with DVDs and not for awhile – and this is the first time I had video over and hour long (I have about 3 hrs in this project). So, based on what I saw in DVD Arch. I was under the impression that DVD’s are 60 minutes – unless you have double layer. That was until I went to buy some – then I saw that they are labeled as 120 min. for 4.7Gb DVDs.

Yea, and that’s just a label for people who only understand VHS tapes. It is a meaningless number. In order to fit 120 minutes on a DVD you would have to encode at an average bitrate of 4.8Mbps. The default is 6Mbps. So you’d have to lower the default bitrate or else you’ll only get about 80 or 90 minutes at 6Mbps.

Any thoughts on the avi inflation by 10x?
The interesting thing is, that in terms of playing time, the total minutes it used on the DVD – even with the “inflation” was correct (i.e. the length that DVD Arch. gave for play-time was the length of the avi file. It didn’t reduce the amount of recording time available.)

This could be a bug. DVD Architect has had problems in the past with predicting file sizes only to have everything fit on the disc without problems.
