It looks like a .CPI file is what I need to show me timecode on AVCHD video files. I have them in a folder, but is there a way to make Vegas10 see them in my timeline (all clips start at 0.00 currently) so I can reference them to my logsheets? I’ve searched everywhere online, and half the stuff I see says Vegas can and half says it’s a problem across many editing apps. The Vegas homepage says “You don’t need it,” which is true, unless you DO need it. Any ideas? Please help, before I tell my client some bad news…

If the timecode is not embedded in the AVCHD file, there is no way to make Vegas use the external .CPI files. Some cameras embed timecode, and some don’t. Vegas looks in the video file for the timecode.

There is a bug in Vegas Pro 10b & 10c that cause timecode not to be recognized in media files. If you are using either of these two versions, this may be your problem. 10a does not have this problem and Sony has said that it will be fixed in the next update.

John, does this mean that if I have a folder with separate CPI files that’s what tells me the info is NOT embedded, or might the info be embedded as well as separate? (Not that this changes anything, but it might help me break bad news to my stressed client).

It depends on the camera. I would ask the camera manufacturer if they embed timecode in the video.
