Best render settings for Flip UltraHD?

Hey I need some help with all this video editing and rendering stuff if you don’t mind. I have a Flip UltraHD which records mp4’s at 1280x720p at 60fps. I’m only doing minor editing in Vegas HD 10, music, text and I’m not sure what to render the final as. I guess what I’m wanting is the highest quality that I can play back on our 1920x1080p NTSC samsung tv. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

How will you deliver this to the TV? Blu-ray disc? or Media Player? If Media Player, what formats does your media player support?
The “Internet 1280×720-30p” template under Sony AVC will give you very high quality. You can always increase the bit-rate to match the rate of your original clips. This should play in most media players or from a PC.

First of all thank you very much!! So there’s no need of trying to render it as 1920x1080p at 60fps? 1280×720 at 30p is good enough? My method of delivery for now is streaming it through an nmt called Popcorn Hour A-110. Here is a quote of the files/containers supported:
he A-110 can play audio and video files in almost any modern format. Out-of-the box video support includes MPEG2 MP@HL, H.264 HP@L4.1 and VC-1 AP@L3 in TS of at least 40Mbps.
“The A-110 can work with the following video containers, which control the format in which the file is saved: MPEG1/2/4 Elementary (M1V, M2V, M4V), MPEG1/2 PS (M2P, MPG), MPEG2 Transport Stream (TS, TP, TRP, M2T, M2TS, MTS), VOB, AVI, ASF, WMV, Matroska (MKV), MOV (H.264), MP4 and RMP4. In terms of how the video is compressed and saved (codecs), the following are supported: XVID SD/HD, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MP@HL, MPEG-4.2, ASP@L5 720p 1-point GMC
WMV9, MP@HL, H.264, BP@L3, MP@L4.0, HP@L4.0, HP@L4.1, VC-1, MP@HL and AP@L3.”
Which one of these should I render the Flip UltraHD files to so it will stream?

Since the Flip records at 1280×720 there is no need to uprez to 1920×1080 because 1280×720 is a perfectly legal HD format that your TV should have no problem with. Since all NTSC TV’s operate at 30fps (29.970 to be exact) there is also no reason to render at 60fps. So 1280×720@30p is a good fit for your footage and HD TV.

Here are the Vegas templates for those formats:
MPEG2 MP@HL
- Use MainConcept MPEG2 with the HDV 720-30p template and change the Constant bit rate (bps) to 9,000,000.
H.264 HP@L4.1
- Use Sony AVC with the Internet 1280×720-30p template and change the Profile to High and the Bit rate (bps) to 9,000,000.
VC-1 AP@L3
- Use Windows Media Video V11 with the 6 Mbps HD 720-30p Video template and change the Format to Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile. Then on the Bit rate tab change Internet/LAN to 9 M.
The reason I’ve selected a bit rate of 9Mbps for all of these is because that’s what yuor Flip Ultra HD shoots. No need to make it higher than the source. Don’t forget to save any template changes you make so it will be easier to render the next time.

I would use Sony AVC because your Flip shoots AVC/H.264 so it should be very close in quality but you can experiment and see which one gives the best quality, playback rate, and file size.
