Quality of rendering, 2nd – 3rd generations.
Hello my friends,
As someone who grew up using tape to tape, and only too aware how the quality radically diminished with each generation copy (copy of a copy etc) I wonder if the problem still persists with digital. I am working on a project with lots of short, complicated sections. I would like to render each as they are completed. However, if I were to then join all the pieces together and render the whole lot as one will I encounter a lessening of quality in the final piece?I am already grateful for any advice.

Anything that has not been modified in any way, shape or form and is rendered to the exact same file format will be identical to the source footage.
When you start adding any kind of correction to your source footage (this includes titles, FX, dissolves, etc.), this no longer applies.
As long as you render to the same format, anything unchanged will smart render (not all video formats do this though so be careful) but anything with changes will be re-rendered.For that reason, the usual suggestion is to save each segment as it’s own project (i.e. veg file).
When you’re done, start a new instance of Vegas, import all the veg files (it’s called “nesting”), drop them on the timeline in the correct order and render to the desired format.
Note that each imported veg will come in as 1 video track and 1 stereo audio track, no matter how many the original file had.
Individual vegs can still be edited by right-clicking in on the timeline and selecting “Edit in Vegas (*.veg”.
Make the desired changes, save the veg file and your timeline video is updated at the same time. -
