Sony Vegas / sony hdr hc5 Device error
about two months ago i got sony vegas 10.
( ive been using this cam and vegas together for over 5 years without an issue like this )
this morning I went to capture a minidv ( of a show that i already uploaded to vegas once but wanted to recapture the opening act as i did not do this the first time around fully I only got about 5 min of their set )
So.
Cam/vegas/minidv tape all have worked together before.
But this time when open the capture feature in vegas ( as I have a million times )
click Hd blah blah
it wont connect to my cam
It WILL capture ” live ” footage from the cam …
but when i switch the camera to play back the mini dv tape it wont capture in vegas
( it will play on camera fine. )
I try to ” reconnect to device ”
my cam shows up in the list but gives Device Error…
I switch back ( on cam ) to ” live feed ” and everything works fine..
try to capture dv tape …. device error….
yesterday everything was fine. I have not taken the camera on a shoot r anything of that nature..
it has not fallen .. etc…NOTHING HAS CHANGED …
Why .. please god why …

If you are really capturing a miniDV tape and you really clicked on HD you just found your problem. You need to click on SD DV to capture miniDV tapes and your camera must be in DV downconvert mode.

But no.
Its shot in HD and I pick the HDV or SDI option not DV ( as I have a million times before with no problem) capture in vegas.As a side note today I imported the footage using windows photo gallery thingy.
the captured footage imports in vegas normally ..So wtf ?
I’m so confused as to why it would just start doing this.A side side note…
This is only happening on my laptop ..
It captures on my desktop using sony 9.0 just fine.
As mentioned before I have ( as recently as the day before this post )
was capturing things just fine using the lap top camera and cable ….Please anyone … thoughts ?

Are you using Vegas Pro 10c? The ‘c’ version is the latest. If Vegas Pro 9.0 works on your laptop then it’s not the camera or cable, which sort of leaves Vegas Pro 10 as the possible cause so make sure you have the latest update.

I run 10.0a maybe?
def not C.I resolved my issue by selecting i. Link CONV ( option under p menu )
and turned it off ..
Some how it had been switched to
” on HDV->DV ”
And was trying to DOWN convert my footage !
Of course it took all day of looking through the setting to narrow it down to that thru trial and error.Thank for lending a hand and your suggestions..
Perhaps this thread will help some one else in the future..John.

10a has a fair amount of bugs. You definitely want to upgrade to 10c. There is no sense in fighting bugs that Sony already fixed.

Yea, it sounded like either you either weren’t using the correct capture tool or your camera wasn’t in the correct capture mode. Glad you found it.
