VOBs and interlacing
Another question if I may ask.
I’ve been working on a short video – source material is VOBs ripped from a dvd using DVD decrypter and then converted to uncompressed avis which then go into the timeline in vegas. This has been totally fine except in a couple of the clips I get flashes of interlacing. Considering I don’t usually get this I’m not quite sure what’s going on or how to solve it. Is there any particular way of solving this? Would it help to use different programs to rip with and convert with? Any help would be appreciated.

Copy the .vob files from the DVD to your hard drive with Windows Explorer, change the extention to .mpg on the .vob files, Open vegas and click on one of the files in the explorer tab within Vegas, and at the bottom of that tab it will tell you the properties of that file and if it’s interlaced or not. I think all DVD mpegs are interlaced but i’m not sure.
You can have Vegas deinterlace it by setting your project settings to Progressive frame, deinterlace method to blend. The visable interlacing should not be seen now. Render as progressive as well. By the way, there is no reason to convert the vob files to uncompressed avi as it won’t increase the quality since it was already compressed as an mpeg to get on the DVD. -
Thanks for that. I was using those settings already – as I said I have not had this problem before – and no difference.
I am converting to avi because my vegas pro 10 doesn’t recognise vobs so I have to convert it to a format that I can use without losing any of the quality so unfortunately that’s a necessary evil.

Vegas won’t see it even if you change the file extention from .vob to .mpg?

You might try importing them properly using File | Import | DVD Camcorder Disc. I agree with Danny that using uncompressed is overkill. Just leave them as MPEG2 and Vegas might smart-render them for sections that you don’t add any FX. It is possible that the footage is 24p in which case it would be progressive but if you are seeing interlacing then it’s probably interlaced.
BTW, if this is a commercial DVD, you do realize that it is illegal to repurpose the content.

I didn’t say it was a commercial dvd and frankly I don’t appreciate the judgmental response. I just asked a simple question.

My responses was not a judgement. It was a By The Way in case you were unaware and it was based on the fact that you are using DVD decrypter which is common “illegal” tool used to pirate DVD’s.
If you don’t appreciate my responses I will stop making them.
