Can’t Fit Bluray to 25Gb Disk
I just spent the time to edit, create menus, etc. for a High-Def production. When I get to the point of burning the BluRay, I realize that the file size is 25.8 Gb and it won’t fit the blank Blurays I have. I clicked “Fit To disk” but just get the message that says;
“Media file too big and couldn’t fit into single disk”….Yes, I know and that’s why I clicked Fit to Disk! All it says is “consider making more media assets available for recompress or removing some media assets…”. Not the clearest help message I’ve ever seen. It took me a few crashes and two days to get it rendered and I need to get this burned by Sunday. Now, I’m a little concerned. Any ideas how to get this to fit a 25Gb bluray? Thanks much!

If you rendered as MPEG2 then switching to AVCHD will allow you to fit more content on the disk. You could also try rendering at a lower bit-rate.

I used “Make Movie” wizard & selected “burn to Bluray” which created .m2v & .w64 files through a long render process. Then, it asks to “Send to DVD Architect” which I did adding the main screen & all the screen selection thumbnails, etc. Then, it tells me it won’t fit & the “Fit to Disk” function doesn’t seem to do anything but tell you it won’t fit. It seems ridiculous I’d have to redo all of this (re-rendering, creation of the menus, etc.) and it’s just luck if it fits. Why doesn’t “Optimize” & “Fit to Disk” do anything? Are there just settings I can adjust in the DVD Architect portion of the render? If so, suggestions to get it from 25.8 to 25Gb?

So you are using Vegas Movie Studio? Which version? When you press Make Movie and the Blu-ray Disc does it give you the option of rendering to several formats?

I just went to File — Optimize Disc within DVD Architect and found I could select the 25.7 Gb video on the left & choose to recompress it. I assume this second recompression will reduce quality substantially. What’s interesting is that when the Recompression is set to “No”, it says the video is 27,713 MB at a bit rate of 24.986 Mbps but as soon as I click Recompress “Yes”, the video says 18,948 MB and a bit rate of 18.00 Mbps. I’ll scale the bit rate up to 22 Mbps & see what happens. I wish this was known before the original rendering (maybe it is estimated somewhere but I missed it).

Yes, Vegas 10 HD Studio.
It doesn’t give me any setting choices using “Make Movie” wizard. Perhaps I should not be using the wizard in the future.
I’ll try the recompression in DVD Architect I just posted info about but perhaps I should start from a fresh render in Vegas Studio with different settings. It’s not a huge deal to add the menus again in DVD architect, it’s just the time for rendering (and it froze on a couple attempts).
Thanks for your help….I’m getting better but still have a ways to go.

Yea, you definitely don’t want to render twice. I would go back and see if you can render it at the correct bit-rate the first time.

I checked on my copy of Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0 and it does not give you an option to create an AVCHD Blu-ray file using Make Movie. You would have to use Project | Render As… and select Sony AVC with the Blu-ray 1920×1080-60i, 16 Mbps video stream template for your video and then render the audio separately as Dolby Digital AC-3 Studio.

Earlier today, I rendered the audio to Dolby Digital AC-3 Studio (*.ac3)and the video to Mainconcept MPEG-2 (*.m2v) with Blu-ray 1920x1080i-60i 25Mbs with custom constant bit rate set to 23Mbps. It seems to have come out O.K. Next time, should I use Sony AVC instead?
Thanks for the advice….I’ve got a functional Blu-ray burned & ready to go for Sunday.

Not necessarily. If lowering the bit-rate from 25Mbps to 23Mbps is all it took to fit the content on the disc then that’s probably fine. If, however, you needed to lower it all the way down to 18Mbps, then I would switch to AVCHD because 18Mbps AVCHD is going to look better than 18Mbps MPEG2.

I’ve been following this thread, because I too have run into the same problem with getting a 2 hr & 15 minute HD video to fit onto a BluRay DVD; it’s always just over 25 gigs, and kills/takes up hours (usually overnight) of rendering time, only to find out that I can’t make it fit. Grrrrr!!!!
I didn’t want to cut the Bit rate down so drastically, either…going below 20 or 18mgs scares me, in terms of losing quality.
HOWEVER,it turns out I already have a client that provides VOD for Amazon clients, etc., and they require AVCHD/MP4 formats, which are usually exported at 25-29 mps., but end up being a LOT smaller than m2v files.
I didn’t know Sony DVD Architect could import/handle MP4 files, so that’s interesting.
So, I just tested a different, but equally long AVCHD/MP4 file for making a BR DVDin DVD architect, and it seems to work, albiet with some additional compression warning messages. I’m going to try it and see if it works ok and looks as good.
