  inconsistent 3gp behavior

  hi folks:

  Trying to figure this one out. I’m on Vegas 7.

  The videos I take with my DroidX are in a 3gp format. Now, sometimes Vegas will import them fine and just treat them as any other file, and sometimes I will get the good old “the reason for the error could not be determined” message & it won’t open the file at all.

  I can’t seem to find any reason behind why it likes some files & not others. So, I’m wondering if anyone has any input on what I might try, since this is getting really frustrating not knowing if I’ll be able to work with a given video.

  Also: would upgrading help? Do later versions of Vegas have this 3gp thing sorted out?

  3gp is a CONTAINER format. In other words you can use a number of different codecs in different arrangements, so you need to look INTO the container and see what codecs there are and what arrangements… then check with Vegas to see if it supports what you have found.

  rob: how do I look *into* the container? And, given that the files are all coming from the same place (my phone) I would assume they are all the same codec… right?

  Grab either MediaInfo or GSpot (both are free) and report back as to what they say the required codec is.

  thanks guys – here’s a screenshot of what gspot is showing me.

  I have several 3gp files from my phone, all of which show this same codec info. however, vegas only imports some of them… i am able to play the files in other programs, which tells me that I have the correct codecs – it’s just that vegas doesn’t seem to be able to consistently figure it out.

  if there’s anything i can do to “help” vegas out with this, let me know.:)

  Download the trial version of Pro 10.
  My guess is that it will have no problem playing your 3gp videos as it handles the latest version of QuickTime which makes playing mp4 files very easy.
