PAR changed in CS4!!!
Posted by Jason Brown on April 22, 2009 at 3:50 amWhy did Adobe change the PAR of widescreen and 4×3 from 1.2 to 1.21 and .9 to .91?
It changed with version CS4. It’s changed in PS and AE…have we been doing it wrong this WHOLE time!?!? 🙂

April 22, 2009 at 4:47 amYes, we were all doing it wrong this whole time, pretty much from the start of desktop post-production software. And now it’s fixed in not just After Effects and Photoshop, but in all of the Adobe video applications, including Premiere Pro.
I tried to explain things in the “Pixel aspect ratio and frame aspect ratio” section of After Effects Help. When you read that section, be sure to read the comments, too; some other folks have chipped in in trying to explain what’s going on, including Chris Meyer, who points out a preference for making things like they were in After Effects CS3.

April 22, 2009 at 12:28 pmWell, here’s the real issue. Any graphics created with the new PAR’s don’t translate back to earlier versions (at least v7.0 in my experience) of AE. So when I import GFX with a PAR of 1.21 created in PS CS4 it comes into AE7 at a .9 PAR. This is a problem for out of house designers who will be providing content. I see this causing all kinds of problems.
Great link though…I had NO idea! clean aperture – production aperture…I had never heard of that! I’ll read through it more later…consider it bookmarked!
