problem importing .mov files
Posted by Nancy Cooley on November 15, 2010 at 1:08 pmHI,
I am working with Vegas Pro 10 on a new PC – 64bit, 6gb RAM.
Upgraded my system to be able to work with HD footage.
I am trying to import .move files on a disc provided by a videographer and the audio imports but no video.
Is there a plugin I need? I have Quicktime 7.6.5, and that won’t play the files either.
Help!!!!!

You probably need to install the codec that the MOV file uses (if one exists). Ask the videographer what codec the files use. If it is a codec that doesn’t exist on Windows the videographer will need to convert them to something you can use on on Windows.

November 15, 2010 at 5:48 pmYes, Why don’t you try Streamclip? It’ll recognise most any type of file, and you can convert it to avi or something else you can edit.

November 15, 2010 at 9:24 pmIt would be a good idea to ask him first… If it is apple hdv or intermediate codec.. you really can’t use them on a pc and he will have to convert them to prores or something else.. If it is dvcprohd then you can purchase the codec from Raylight..K

November 16, 2010 at 8:20 pmThanks, I’ll try all of the above and if I have success I’ll let you know in case anyone else has this problem. I read some earlier posts and had no luck with some of the suggestions, was hoping there was a recent easy fix available.

November 17, 2010 at 5:25 amThat program didn’t work, but I downloaded the trial of Xilisoft and it looks to be the one, don’t see any loss of quality either. Converted .mov to .avi’s no problem. And the full version is under $60. What a relief!

It should be pointed out that the instructions on that link will have you make an Xvid file which is not support by Sony Vegas and doesn’t edit well. Xvid is a highly compressed delivery format and not to be used for editing (although a lot of people try). It also will not retain the quality of your original Canon 5D/7D files like Cineform will. I appreciate that you use it, but I would not recommend it.
