Vegas settings for playback on iMovie

Having tried, failed and googled myself almost to death I am struggling to render a file out of Vegas which can be successfully played back with iMovie (e.g. 2008, 2009 versions).
My set up is Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 on Windows and the target environment where playback is needed is various recent versions of iMovie (e.g. 2008, 2009) on Mac. Even successful playback on QT would be a start but the real goal is iMovie.
I have tried rendering as MOV and MP4 (both MainConcept and Sony) with various render settings.
The best I have achieved is basic playback but:
– in iMovie there is no ability to pick different segments without
it crashing.
– in quicktime no ability to fast forward without it crashingIt seems from my extensive googling that H264 could be the way to go, but I cannot see this as an option on Vegas 9.0. I understand that the MP4 output may be using H264 so that is the way I have gone, but no joy – despite various permutations of the settings.
Can anyone help please?

If you think AVC/H.264 will work then you can buy Quicktime Pro and it will convert your video to h.264 as a MOV file (Vegas cannot do this).

Thank you very much for your input – I will try that.
In terms of having edited the footage in Vegas (the source file was captured from Video8 as avi Video for Windows, 25fps interlaced 720x576x24, DV with 16bit Stereo Uncompressed audio) how do I export the file ready for QT Pro. Do I need to render it out as something?

I would render in it’s original format which would be PAL DV in your case.

Moving to QT Pro for the final stage of this project has solved my compatibility issue – cheers for that!
It seems however there is one more hurdle to resolve. When I am viewing the mov file in a larger window or full screen (> 6 inch high) there is very noticeable horizontal flicker/ interference on panning or zooming. It always appears about one third down from the top of the window/screen.
I have checked the original capture as well as the PAL DV output from Vegas and there is no problem.
The settings I used in QT to make the mov (after Google research) were H.264, 2000 kbits/sec, keyframe every 24 frames, 2-pass, 25FPS, tried no deinterface as well as with deinterlace. The size is 768×576 because QT resized to this after the Vegas export – size throughout Vegas process was 720×576.
I had the same problem when I rendered from Vegas as mp4.
Please could you give me your thoughts.

I’ve never experienced flicker with Quicktime movies. I’m not sure what it could be. You might want to start a new thread about the flicker problem so more people see it.
