You need a firewire connection, not USB, as Vegas will not recognize it for capturing.
See if you can find a miniDV camcorder that has the pass-through feature.
By that,I mean composite video and audio in and firewire out into your computer.
If you want to spend more money, look into an ADVC-55 or ADVC-110.

Does it have a firewire connection? I assume not and you will need some type of external Analog to Digital converter to get footage to the computer.

What is the make and model of your camera? It may assist us in providing the right advice.

I don’t think the computer has firewire. I will not be in that studio till mid week next week. I will check it out. Is there anything else I should look for? I was taking a course and the teacher was using vegas to edit, but he was using something else to digi the footage. I don’t remember what the software was called, would anyone know about this step? or do you guys digi with vegas?

[johnsabbath d'urzo] “I don’t think the computer has firewire.”

The more important question is does the camera have firewire? If it’s just Hi8 and not Digital8 it probably does not which meads you cannot capture your footage without a device that can digitize analog footage. As Mike suggested, you’ll need a Digital8 camera or a device like the Canopus ADVC-55 or ADVC-110.
