  • An error occurred opening the media file.

I have been working with Vegas 9.0.c for about a month now and have had no problems. I downloaded a few more video clips to use on my latest project and converted them to .wmv (as I always do). Today when I tried to work on my project I got the following pop up when the project was loading:

“An error occurred opening the media file.”

    F:\OutputFolder\0115.wmv

What do you want to do?

    -)Specify a replacement media file
-)Ignore error and leave media file offline
-)Ignore this and all subsequent errors

I have tried each of these options as the project usually chooses a random group of media files that are ‘errored.’ After selecting any of these choices Vegas locks up and I cannot do anything. Any ideas?

I gather you can still open other .wmv files you made before but not this one right? Sounds like it’s corrupted for some reason. If you don’t still have the original footage and only the file that won’t open, I would try a free program called streamclip. I have been able to recover bad files with it before by converting it to DV avi or an editable format. It’s worth a shot. Here’s a link to a free download.

If your running Windows 7 or Vista, Right click and run as administrator. It runs right out of the folder and doesn’t get installed, like a portable. Hope this helps, Danny Hays

I can open the all the .wmv files outside of Vegas and they are fine. Also, the error I get is erratic, meaning it tells me different media files are failing to open each time I open Vegas. This leads me to think it is a problem with Vegas, not my media.

Your saying sometimes they open and sometimes the same ones don’t? I would uninstall and re-install Vegas then. Danny Hays

I tried reinstalling and nothing happened. Here is a screenshot of what I am getting.

The media file that is failing to open is the thing that is varying. For example, sometimes 0124.wmv (as seen in SS) fails to open, and sometimes a different group of .wmv files fail to open.

Vegas is not the best application for editing WMV files. WMV is primarily a highly compressed delivery format. I would transcode the files into a format that is easier to edit like DV, MJPEG, CineForm, Lagarith, Huffyuv, etc.
