I’ve created a tutorial on YouTube called “Floating Text on Water in a 3D Perspective with Sony Vegas Pro” to show one of the COW members how to do this. I thought the general community might be interested because it shows several Vegas techniques including Height Map, Displacement Map, Parent/Child Compositing, and 3D Track Motion.

Be sure to watch it in HD:

    That’s fantastic John, thanks!

However it would have been even better a few days ago when I was playing around trying to achieve this sort of effect myself!!

I got there in the end using the generated media as the displacement map so I’ll go back and play with using the video track and height map as well now and see which I prefer 🙂

I have found that the displacement map is more sensitive to media that is driving it and will give finer detailed results, while the height map is great for more smooth liquid effects. Thanks for the feedback.

    Hi, John.
Just found this little tutorial of yours.
Being the sad chap I am, I’m sat here in front of the TV with my new laptop, and your video made me put “The Bourne Supremacy” on pause mode while I watched it!
So, there you have it – You are more ‘exciting’ (if you know what I mean?) than Jason Bourne!

    One question:
Am I able to achieve these effects on Vegas 8?

    Many thanks

    Dave Pendry.

lol, I don’t know about that but I’m glad you liked it.

Yes, these should work all the way back to Vegas 6 or whenever 3D track motion was introduced.
