I have the following – Canon XH-A1 Camcorder, Sony Vegas Pro 9, Dell D830 with IEEE 1394 Firewire connection… Is it possible to use the Xh-A1 as the interface between the Dell and a monitor (using the firewire) for external monitoring from Sony Vegas? If this work, tell me how… maybe I don’t have the setting correct.

It should be possible. I don’t have a Canon XH-A1 but if it has “pass-thru” mode it will send the signal from firewire out through it’s external video jacks. Most camcorders will do this for monitoring so you should connect it and see if it works. If you do this a lot, you might want to invest in a more permanent connection like the Canopus ADVC-110 to save wear and tear on your camera.
