MPEG won’t import into Vegas
Hi,
I have a .mpg file (Video Only) that won’t import into the Vegas Timeline.
NB: The file plays fine with WMP & VLC. I know Vegas opens and saves MPEGS so not sure what the issue is.
After doing some research it appears as though Vegas won’t import an Elementary Stream only muxed, is that correct? Which seems crazy as it can create elementary MPEGS.
If this is indeed the case and Vegas CAN’T import the VIDEO ONLY MPEG has anyone found a work around without messing with the original file?

My Setup:
Sony Vegas 8.1 running on WINDOWS VISTA 64bit (yup)The .mpg file was created at a professional post facility. The elements were requested separately IE: MPEG VIDEO & separate AC3 AUDIO files.
When I try to import the file into Vegas it says “The file is an unsupported format”.
I’ve also tested it with GSPOT and it says everything’s good and all required codecs etc… are installed.

Actually it’s not crazy at all. Why should Vegas have to ingest every format that it can produce? Some formats are created for distribution and there is no need to be able to edit them. So yes, Vegas can create far more formats than it can ingest.

It has nothing to do with the fact that it’s a “video only” MPEG file. It has to do with it being a stream type that Vegas doesn’t open.
Try using a utility like tsMuxeR to remux it into a transport stream that Vegas can open.

I understand where you’re coming from, and I get it’s a delivery format (not suggested for editing) but currently Vegas won’t import the video of my Master High Res file (QT), and I need to pull a clip from the footage and figured the MPEG would be fine.
Thanks for the tsMuxeR suggestion, great tool to be introduced to, I appreciate that. Unfortunately however when I try to import the file the software says “Can’t detect stream type”, so I guess there’s something else wrong.

What version of Quicktime are you using? Vegas Pro 8.1 cannot use any version above 7.6.4. Also, you will need the 64-bit version of Quicktime if you want to use the 64-bit version of Vegas.

Well then Vegas Tech Support have been guiding me wildly.
I actually think you were trying to help me out with the question regarding my QT no video import issue in another thread.
I initially had QT version 7.6.2 (didn’t work), I was told to roll back to 7.5.5 (didn’t work) then they told me a new version came out that fixed a lot of bugs and to update to that – 7.6.7 (didn’t work)
Per my other thread response, I don’t beleive they make QT specifically for 64-bit. There’s just WIN or MAC etc… THere’s no where to specify what bit software to D/L.

Have you tried using Vegas Pro 8.0c?
I personally would not use Vegas Pro 8.1 for any serious work. If you really demand 64-bit then you should upgrade to Vegas Pro 9.0e. Vegas Pro 8.1 was sort of a “technology preview” and it’s based on 8.0b and doesn’t have any of the new features or bug fixes that are in 8.0c. Like I said… I wouldn’t use it for serious work.
If I were you, I would download the trial of Vegas Pro 9.0e and if it works, you have your solution right there. IMHO, trying to get old software to work with new formats is not worth the trouble. Just upgrade.
