  • wide screen DV plus std DV = black bars on top and bottom?

Posted by Kent Clark on July 30, 2010 at 1:52 am

I have some family vacation video, most shot in standard DV but some shot with our Sony DCR-HC48 camcorder. This is not an HDV camcorder but it does have a wide screen 16:9 capture option which was enabled for the video shot with it.

In the Vegas Pro 8 Properties I chose the NTSC DV Widescreen (720×480, 29.970 fps) template for rendering. I expected to end up with black bars on either side for the DV footage and a full screen for the wide screen footage (this is for viewing on a wide screen LCD TV).

In DVD Architect I also chose the NTSC DV widescreen option. But when I preview the project the DV footage has a black box on all four sides while the widescreen footage has black bars at top and at bottom.

Were my expectations about the look of this project wrong or have I done something wrong in preparing it?

    Thanks for your help.

What did you use for your project properties? I would set your project to DV Widescreen. Then when you render to DV Widescreen it should fill the entire widescreen with no black bars anywhere and the regular 4:3 DV video will have black pillarboxes on ether side (which you could fill with a Generated Media background in your project.)

Hi John, I forgot to add that I also set the project properties to NTSC DV widescreen. I thought I would get what you describe but instead I have a much smaller square of standard DV video surrounded by black and then horizontal black bars on the widescreen DV.

Well, the problem is solved, or I should say there never was a problem. In the DVD Architect preview mode it showed black bars at the top and bottom but when I burned the disc and played it there were no horizontal bars. I checked a standard width project in DVDA and it showed just the actual screen in preview mode. I don’t know if this is a quirk of the widescreen mode but I spent a long time trying to solve a problem that didn’t exist.

Thanks John for taking the time to try and help.

Yea, that is deceiving the way DVD Architect previews it. I would trust the preview in Vegas alone.
