Bad performance when transfering data through network (Vegas Pro 8.0)
Hi, my name is Mynor, I work in an office here in Guatemala, and we use Vegas of course. Recently we moved to Windows 7, new machines came up too.
We are having a problem we hadn´t before. When we transfer data using our network (a 15 Gb .avi for example) to a hard disk and we capture a DV tape in the same hard disk at the same time (of course), drops come up and the system with the source file starts to run slowly too.
It´s weird, we have now better machines and a new operating system (Windows 7 – 64bits).
We made some comparisons using the old machines with windows XP 32 bits and the difference was notable. We even try capturing with Vegas 9 trial version thinking about the 32 or 64 bits compatible possibilities.
When we transferred 3 files and made a capture at the same time in the old machines with XP and less RAM, any drops came up.
Rendering is ok, we can work as good as before but when we use the network we experience these problems. It can´t be the network because using the other machines there was no problem at all.
We even try using windows 7 basic and classic skins.
Here are some characteristics of both computers, the old and the new ones.
Old machines:
DELL PPRECISON T7400
Windows XP 32 bits
4 Gb RAM (the XP only use 3 of them)
Nvida 256
Vegas 8New machines:
DELL PRECISION T7500
Windows 7 64 bits
4 Gb RAM
Nvidia 512
Vegas 8
Any help of suggestions?

Also, if I’m not mistaken, Windows 7, by default, installs IPv6 as well as IPv4. You might want to ask your network administrator if he wants you to remove the IPv6 protocol. But I don’t think that’s the problem. But it may be a start. That’s one of the differences between XP and Windows 64. Also, can you duplicate this problem by transferring other kinds of large files, like still photos? etc.? Or is only a problem with video transfers like these?

Thanks for answering Douglas. Yes I work at Universidad Francisco Marroquín.
The antivirus is the same we used before in the old machines. We hadn´t any troubles using it.
About what you said on the network cards, Im not sure if you are refering to the way we share the files.
We will try what Alf suggest now. I will post the results later.

Alf, thanks for the suggestions but we tried all of them and the problem is still with us.
Dell 7400 and 7500 have almost the same hardware, the differenes between them are not in the network card. 7500 should have a better performance, we just don´t understand what the problem is.
Any other suggestions are welcome. I will be searching on the web for any other solutions.

Also don’t rule out the server side. Is the OS there Mac, UNIX/Linux or Windows (and which version). There could be a problem with the version of OS at that end. Also isolate whether the file transfers are slow using FTP, which pretty much helps isolate it also. If FTP transfer is fast on XP & W7, and using the server mount is slow, you’ve pointed away from the network card, to something at the OS level. Best of luck.

We have noticed some different facts between the properties on the Broadcom Nextreme 57xx card we use in Precision T7400 and T7500
In General
Old machine
T7400 shows: PCI bus 8, device 0, function, 0
New Machine
T7500 shows: PCI bus 6, device 0, function, 0In Advanced
T7400 shows in Row Control Value: Disabled
T7500 shows in Row Control Value: Auto
Another difference in Advanced was that there is an option on the new ones (T7500)named as Wake Up Capabilities, T7400 didn´t show us that option.
The System we are using is Windows 7 Ultimate. Could it be possible that if Windows 7 asks for a better hardware system resources, it asks for a higher bandwidth too? Have you experienced better results using the network and Vegas8 with XP? We really don´t want to lool back at XP, rendering is better now but it is really necesarry for us to resolve this network nightmare.

John points out that 9.x is the only Vegas version supported on W7. So you *could* be experiencing something in Vegas 8. But I doubt it. Anyway, get on the current version of Vegas if you aren’t already.
But back to the net card, I would *guess* that the wake up value is for a network wakeup for pushing software to the card, not something you would care about. But the “disabled” fuction on Row Control for the old card vs. Auto might mean something. I’d try setting it at disabled, rebooting, and running a test. If nothing happens, reset it to Auto.
I have not done much network based Vegas file transfers though. Have you tried FTP’ing the files as I suggested, and timing the transfer? That would tell you whether it’s the card, or something else. If both FTP and Vegas file transfers were the same, (meaning both slow), then you known it’s under that layer in the computer OS, or the network card and it’s drivers. (or the server connection). But if you experience slow Vegas and fast FTP of the same file, then you know that it’s a Vegas or the way it’s mounted (i.e. Windows connecting via some login to the server).
