Why does Vegas (and every other video editor) lag when playing .m2ts files? I have been pulling my hair out over this and have seriously tried EVERYTHING. Nothing works. I have dozens of .m2ts files sitting on my hard drive that were recorded from my HD PVR (they’re CoD vids) but I can’t edit them because they play SO DAMN SLOW in ANY editing software I use. The audio is just fine, the video runs at about 2 fps. I know it’s not my computer because they play perfectly in media players, and because I have seen a lot of other people with way better PC specs than mine and they have the same problems. I am on the verge of giving up and selling my PVR, because absolutely NOTHING is working. And yes, I have tried video converters. I have tried like 5 and have tried to convert the .m2ts files to every filetype imaginable (AVI, WMV, FLV, MPEG2, MP4, etc.). They all look like snit, lag, have low resolution, and overall don’t look near as good as the original. I just want to edit the .m2ts files. I have no clue what to do because I have tried everything. Any help would be immensely appreciated.

Well it’s definitely frustrating, but that was never really intended as an editing format. I’ve edited plenty of m2ts files and the home movies from my Sony camcorder are 1080i AVC mts files, and everything normally plays okay in Vegas but once you add any kind of transitions or effects things can get slow. It sounds like if it’s really bad on your system you may want to look into an intermediary like Cineform. I feel weird always having to recommend a product I’ve never needed badly enough to break down and purchase personally, but I’ve tried the demo and while the files it creates are going to take up a lot more hard drive space, they’re perfect for editing with.
