Audio question
Last week I shot a performance of a comedian. I had a direct stage mic audio feed, plus a separate audience mic. I tried to isolate the audience mic as much as possible from the performers’ stage mic, but of course there was some leakage.
The performers’ stage mic is very well isolated, with hardly any audience rollover.
The question: Is there any way to subtract the stage mic from the audience mic track, so that I’m left with a more isolated audience capture? If so, this would make for a much better final mix, where I can pump up the audience reaction to jokes, etc. Fortunately the comedian was good, so there is something to work with!

While audio comes in as a stereo track, it’s very easy to split this so that you have two separate tracks that you have full control over.
I shoot stage plays this way and never have any problems bring up the applause mic as it’s on its own track. -

I suspect I did not explain myself as clearly as I could have:
I recorded 2x separate mono channels.
- One channel is a clear and isolated stage mic of the talent.
- The other mono channel is an audience mic that has both the talent and audience (I was not successful isolating just the audience on this 2nd mono channel).
So is there a way to take the two channels, mix to cancel out the talent (channel 1) from the talent/audience mix (channel 2) for a resultant of a mono channel with just audience? (as much as possible)

I would try reversing the phase on one of the tracks, zoom in and make sure the talent audio is in perfect sync, sound is slow and mic distance will make a difference. You maybe able to cancel out some of the talent this way. Hope this helps, Danny Hays

You can place each audio file on a separate track in the timeline, then fade the audience track in and out as necessary to get the effect you’re looking for. You can also “throw” the sound of the audience to the left and right to get good results as well. Hope that helps.
