  • What Adobe After Effect can change a live video scene to appear as animated?

Posted by Cynthia Sands on May 31, 2005 at 9:07 pm

Is Adobe Photoshop capable of 2d animating a live video shot of kids birthday? If not Adobe, is there a plug in or some other software that can do it? If so, am interested in employing someone to accomplish it, as I know nothing about how to do these things.
    thanks for any info.

    Hi Cynthia,

when you say ‘animating’, what do you mean:
do you mean stylizing or simplifying the motion, moving the picture around, making the video look handdrawn, etc.

Be a little more specific what visiual effect you want to achieve.

Thank you for your response. I was thinking of the possibility of the live video of the kid eating his birthday cake appear as a 2d hand drawn animated style. Not knowing some of the terms you used in your question, perhaps it would be advantageous to talk on the phone. Where are you located? Perhaps you could email me your phone contact.

You could export an image sequence, apply a sketch action in Photoshop, then reimport the image sequence back into AE.

    Try this link:

Thank you so much for your quick response. I think I know now how to ask the correct question. Has anyone created a 2d cartoon effect using live video as the basis? Some of the effect applications I’ve seen look like they would be interesting when applied to my son eating his birthday cake. Watercolor, or charcoal drawing, or “cartoon” stylizing. Nothing “elaborate” just 2d. I’m supposing when using a technique applied to video footage, the computer renders each frame applying the effect to each frame automatically.
    Yes?

    HI Cynthia,
like Seth said, you can apply a “sketch”-like effect to every frame of the video.
This might give a nice look, but it depends very much on the quality of the footage.
If there’s very little contrast or color in the image, the result may be dissapointing.

Check out Seth’s link and see if there’s a look there that you like.
