Activity Forums VEGAS Pro The oft raised Tutorial question

Probably posted somewhere obvious but I’m not seeing a pointer to basic usage video tutorials for vegas 9 or other recent versions.

I see the list pointed to by the link, but it seems to be a vast array of anything and everything. After scrolling through it a bit I’m not seeing basics tutorials.

Googling for them is really a hit or miss operation as there seem to be many terrible tutorials on you-tube… (A few good ones to I’m sure)

Even the good ones seem really limited to very little coverage.

Can anyone point to a lengthy `Basics’ tutorial or set of tutorials?

You don’t say if you’re using Pro 9 or Movie Studio.
Either way, Sony has several tutorial videos on their site for both types of Vegas as well as Acid, Sound Forge and more.

    Sorry… vegas 9.0e

SO are you saying the only things are available worth while are the payfor training discs?

I had hoped there might be a few worthwhile freebies online.

Scroll down the linked page to the “Free Training Videos” section.

    Aaaackk yup, I see Thanks.

Looking at the Les Stroud Intro to Vegas 9 I find that is so dark as to be really difficult to follow. Maybe if I download it, I can lighten enough to be usable with vegas?

Harry, it looks fine on my PC.
If you don’t want to adjust your monitor’s brightness & contrast, than go ahead and do what you’re thinking of.

Well if I set for this video, everything else will be off.

    Is this what you see?

Yes, that’s about the same as what I see.
However, WMP does have adjustment settings built into it.
Right-click on the very top left of the player and select View – Enhancements – Video Settings.
In there you’ll find Hue, Saturation, Brightness & Contrast controls.

There are over 300 training vids from VASST on Youtube and Vimeo. Can’t comment on whether they’re “terrible” or not (I don’t think they are), but they’re free.
    Search for VASSTTraining on Youtube.

I don’t think that the ‘entry level’ training products are a problem, and you have found a good source at the Sony site, along with YouTube, etc. I’ve never not found a link to something I needed as a someone with only 7 months of Vegas use. Also, if you can find a copy of Sony’s Digital Video & Audio Production training used, it is worth having on your bookshelf. It covers most of the basics.

What I think is lacking is a comprehensive, in-depth overview of all the advanced settings in Vegas. What are the real uses for many of these menu items, for example? I know what they ‘sound like’ but not sure when and where to use them to best affect. I feel I’m just not getting all out of this product. I also keep a workstation around with FCP for example, and I have a great book for that called “Final Cut Pro Power Skills” by Jordan. I’d love to see such a book for Vegas.

The trouble is that not all tutorials are created equal. Some authors make it plain and simple while others leave you scratching your head right off the bat.Sony gives you the basics, but really should step up the tutorial program. The webinar’s are helpful, but don’t happen near enough.

Like everything else associated with editing there is someone there wanting you to reach in the pocket so you can do all the cool and latest plugins without all the work of trying to figure it out on your own. Not to say that the information and help from those on this website is not appreciated. It is second to none. Finding the time to wade through it all would really be a plus…;^) I’d rather spend that time hands on and learning through trial and tribulation.
