Hi Guys,
would value some advice.
I have used for the last few years a Canon MD101 dv cassette camcorder which has served me well. I’m doing a piece of video that I shot in India and it has taken me hours to fire wire everything plus the joys of stuttering and so I have decided to upgrade (abit) as money is tight. I have been recommended the
canon legria fs200
and I’d like to know the following.
I am not looking for a HD camcorder because of price and an older laptop.
Is this any good for a standard sd camcorder. Are there any competitors I should look at ?
Can I just copy the files from the SD card and put them straight into vegas movie studio or do I have to convert them. Not too sure how all that works.Any help gratefully received.

Congratulations on asking questions before buying a camera. You don’t know how many people would have just bought the camera first and then complained about the quality after rendering later (and blamed it on Vegas).
As the reviews that Bruce linked to point out, this is a camera for people who want to shoot-n-view or shoot-n-burn to DVD. This is NOT a good camera for someone who wants to edit their videos. It shoots low quality MPEG2 video that is far worse than the miniDV that you are use to working with. You don’t want to buy this camera or any SD MPEG2 camera. If you are not ready to go to HD, then miniDV is the highest quality (which you already have).
I’m concerned about your comment with stuttering. If your computer can’t play SD DV back smoothly then you don’t need a new camera, you need a new computer! A new camera will just make things worse as the newer video formats require a LOT more processing power than DV ever did.
