  • sorting clips using date and time stamp

When sorting clips in the “project media” window, I’ve notice I can use the “Timecode in” header, the “size” header, the “Timecode out” header, the “title” header or almost any other header in the project media box when the “details” view is selected.

I need to arrange hundreds of clips in chronological order based on the “Date/TimeStamp” field. But this doesn’t work so well.

I admit it does sort the clips, but… I can’t determine any rhyme or reason for the order it puts them in, whether I’ve selected ascending or descending.

This would be a big help to me due to the fact that all my clips, from all the tapes, are date/time stamped and they and need to be arranged in the order they were shot.

    Thank!

    Interesting . . .

I can confirm I can see Date/Time stamp on AVI from SD camera. But I don’t on MJPEG and MP4 files – and yet both of these formats HAVE D/T stamp in the Vegas Properties > General.

I’m wondering if this is NOT revealing in VP9e? Can you actually SEE the info under that column? Also, Vegas has never seen my DD-MM-YYY (Euro)format, it always sees it as MM-DD-YYYY(US) even though PC is set to Euro format.

But getting back to your quandary. I can sort on SD AVI files and have either the earliest or latest first using a sort.

You can also try the Right Click within the Project Media Folder Pane and try the “Search Media Bins”. In theory you could enter a Date/Time Stamp value and have your search come up with 1/6/2010. It You then have an option to save this BIN as say: 1/6/2010 – or whatever . .

But you have raised some interesting issues . .

    Thanks

Thank you for the reply. Yes I do see the Date/TimeStamp data in the Date/TimeStamp column. And there is some sorting going on when I click the header.

I think I’m beginning to understand the sorting scheme used in this column. It appears that it is taking the numerical value of the numbers as they appear without regard to there place value significance. MM/DD/YYYY HH:MM:SS or May 09, 2000 6:45 PM = 05/09/2000 06:45 pm looks like…
5,092,000,645. While 12/14/1999 10:15 pm looks like 121,419,991,015 and is therefore a larger number, but at the same time and earlier date.

If you were to try to sort a wide variety of dates and years I believe you would see the similar results.

Understand, if I were only looking at material shot on the same day or maybe within the same month, the sorting might be usable.

This an example of my project media window with date/timestamp selected to sort in descending value. Notice the year column begins with 1999… then 2000… then back to 1999. and it isn’t even descending…

I have discovered the Date/Time Stamp column in Sony Video capture 6.0 has the right sorting capabilities. So why is Vegas 9 so screwed up?

Also a utility called DVDate 7.7.7En does a very good job, but I could only use it as reference when selecting the order of clips for my DVDs.
