Does anyone know of an “accessible” Plex forum?

I asked the question on this forum because I tried to access the only Plex forum I’ve seen, and on sign-up it asks for a business name. I’m not a business so apparently can’t use it.

Sorry, I’ll provide more explanation. I am not recording TV shows, movies or anything else that anyone else has done.

I’m ingesting old Hi8 and MiniDV recordings of my kids for FCPX editing, AND want to view them using Plex. Thought I’d seen something from another on this forum that was doing the same…maybe he was the only one.

Downloaded FREE version of PlEX on Mac. Want to view home videos on smart TV, however running into issues:

* Would like to keep same file structure as on the Mac (i.e. Year/Event), but when viewing on TV, the files are all mixed together in the same folder. Is there an alternative?

Does Plex Server work with OWC Thunderbay?

Since my post I bought a OWC Thunderbolt drive enclosure with two 8TB drives in a mirrored configuration.

Just saw this reply from Frank Maxwell. Sorry for the delay. Since I was having trouble trying to use FCPX archive I started using LifeFlix to capture and just putting the media in folders. Hopefully that won’t be a problem, as opposed the the FCPX archive method.

What is your workflow/backup to store family videos?

I have begun capturing 12TB of miniDV, Hi8 and VHS tape. I’m thinking of using hard drives, but open to suggestions. Ideally, the media would be accessible to view on a large flat screen TV downstairs via wifi and phone or laptop.

Trying to archive DV Tape with FCPX 10.3. It results in an archive icon folder but no contents. I can import, but archive not working.

Anyone know why?

How to Archive Libraries or Projects from Final Cut Pro X

I was about to start digitizing my over 278 videotapes to camera archive when I heard an alternative called XML. The apparent argument in favor of XML is that it’s more likely to be read, either by a Apple products or otherwise, as it is more universally used format.

Anyone used XML for archiving?

I’m using the Canopus ADVC-110 digital converter. I don’t think its still in production, but should be available used. It accepts S-video or component. It does not have HDMI out, but does have Firewire 400 out. I use a Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 cable from the ADVC, then a TB 2 to Firewire 800 adapter to the Mac.

Big Sur will not open old tape-based media such as Hi8 or DV.

My original Hi8 camera will transcode to digital. The issues are 1) Will work with TB2 (although with a frozen preview screen using FCPX, and 2) will not work at all with TB3.

Andy, thanks for the detailed info re: Sony Digital8. I’m using a Hi8 Sony CCD-TR101 (1993), the same camera I used to make the original Hi8 DV recordings. It does import via FCPX on my older TB2 Mac. Although the FCPX Preview window freezes while importing, the recording is OK. I have no idea why the FCPX window freezes though.

Thanks Mark. The lower left of my FCPX 10.4.7 import window reads “create archive…” Maybe you have a newer version – same thing?

I have it working with TB2; just won’t work with my TB3.

Tried Image Capture, however it will not recognize the capture device (ADVC-110).

Tried Quick Time Player, which worked but offered no control thereafter.

Final Cut Pro X does work with the Thunderbolt 2 Mac.

…But my newer Thunderbolt 3 Mac does not work.

Has ANYONE had any luck with capturing to a Thunderbolt 3 Mac.

Tried QT Player, but it keeps stopping every few seconds.

Trying to capture Hi8 video tape, but when capturing, Preview window freezes and jitters. The audio is fine, and when I stop the capture and play back, it looks fine.

The camera is a Sony Handycam CCD TRD101. I also tried my Sony VCR EV-C100 with the same result.
