<p>I&#8217;m ingesting old Hi8 and MiniDV recordings of my kids for FCPX editing, AND want to view them using Plex.  Thought I&#8217;d seen something from another on this forum that was doing the same&#8230;maybe he was the only one.</p>

Sorry for the delay.  Since I was having trouble trying to use FCPX archive I started using LifeFlix to capture and just putting the media in folders.  Hopefully that won&#8217;t be a problem, as opposed the the FCPX archive method.</p>

<p>I have begun capturing 12TB of miniDV, Hi8 and VHS tape.  I&#8217;m thinking of using hard drives, but open to suggestions.  Ideally, the media would be accessible to view on a large flat screen TV downstairs via wifi and phone or laptop.</p>

The apparent argument in favor of XML is that it&#8217;s more likely to be read, either by a Apple products or otherwise, as it is more universally used format.</p>

I don&#8217;t think its still in production, but should be available used.   It accepts S-video or component.  It does not have HDMI out, but does have Firewire 400 out.  I use a Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 cable from the ADVC, then a TB 2 to Firewire 800 adapter to the Mac.</p>

It confirms what I suspected all along, but had not found confirmation anywhere.  The link confirms this:  &#8220;When used to connect Thunderbolt 3 devices to a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 Mac, it must be a self-powered device. The issues are 1) Will work with TB2 (although with a frozen preview screen using FCPX, and 2) will not work at all with TB3.</p>

<p>As for long-term storage I plan to transcode into ProRes 422 and use Mark&#8217;s suggestion of Camera Archive for long-term storage.  Hopefully those two&hellip;</p>

I&#8217;m using a Hi8 Sony CCD-TR101 (1993), the same camera I used to make the original Hi8 DV recordings.  It does import via FCPX on my older TB2 Mac.  Although the FCPX Preview window freezes while importing, the recording is OK.  I have no idea why the FCPX window freezes though.</p>

The lower left of my FCPX 10.4.7 import window reads &#8220;create archive&#8230;&#8221;  Maybe you have a newer version &#8211; same thing?</p>
<p>I have it working with TB2; just won&#8217;t work with my TB3.</p>

<p>Tried Quick Time Player, which worked but offered no control thereafter.</p>
<p>Final Cut Pro X does work with the Thunderbolt 2 Mac.</p>

<p>&#8230;But my newer Thunderbolt 3 Mac does not work.</p>
<p></p>
<p>Has ANYONE had any luck with capturing to a Thunderbolt 3 Mac.</p>

<p>Haven&#8217;t thought of trying Image Capture.  I&#8217;ll try that.</p>
<p>I do have an older Mac with Firewire 2, which does work, but wanted to use the newer Mac.</p>
<p>After watching a Youtube video from a guy that said he bought the Thunderbolt 2 to 3 converter, I assumed it would work for me too.  I bought one from BestBuy&hellip;</p>

<p> Want to convert analog Hi8 videotape to digital, using a 2019 Mac with a Thunderbolt 3 plug.</p>
<p>My connections are as follows:</p>
<p>The camera is connected to a digital converter with an s-video cable.</p>
<p>The digital converter is connected to the Mac with a Firewire 400 to Firewire 800&hellip;</p>

The audio is fine, and when I stop the capture and play back, it looks fine.</p>
<p>The camera is a Sony Handycam CCD TRD101.  I also tried my Sony VCR EV-C100 with the same result.</p>
<p>My first attempt was with the VCR (Firewire 400), using a firewire 400 to 800 cable.&hellip;</p>
