I went with the first one … the slight difference in mine is that the images are a bit smaller. I made it that way to leave space on the right side of the frame for the titles.

All my photos and video clips are full hd, 16:9, 3840×2160. Making them the same size overcame other problems I was having but not all 😀 as you know

There are only 2 key frames, one at the start and one at the end. I don’t see any others that I added accidentally.
The start and end keyframes are essential for the animation.

Thanks for the suggestion – that only matters, I think, if you the clips are not rotated or don’t have their size reduced. It’s when you are trying to fill the screen with a source clip of a different ratio.

Why are there white bars at the top and bottom?

SOLUTION
The solution to the problem of the part of the image(s) being black at those places where I wanted the background to be showing through was to add another plugin to the top layer.
This was the MEDIA GENERATOR plugin and setting it to the LUMINOSITY preset.

Thanks. The video’s a good intro to layer masks for me but you create selections either using anchor points in edit pan/crop or using the gradient tool to select a horizontal section.
I need to create a selection based on luminance values or by manipulating luminance of a channel or with a combination (maybe even drawing/paiting too).

I am trying to make a mask so that I can darken an overexposed background but keep the perfectly exposed interviewee in the foreground untouched.
It looks amateurish at the moment and I won’t use it uncorrected.

Good advice but how exactly do I search for information on a particualr NLE program? I would be searching for information on Vegas Pro mostly.
Can I search the vegas posts only?

My laptop does turn on immediately when the battery is empty if the psu is plugged in.
And on previous laptops I have had the laptop needed the psu plugged in no matter if the battery was fully charged in order to do the most resource intensive activities in video editing.
