Agree, with David. Even 10 years after, the gradient “handles” thing still is a pain in the… neck.
Group the gradient with all the shapes you want to apply this gradient is a key solution!

Have used Auto-Trace after all. Not the best result, but I played with an options and result satisfied me. I’ve prepared a good animated rounded mask for Lottie/Rive export.

If we are talking about animation from the center:

1) add trim path to the line
2) duplicate the line
3) set 1st line trim keyframes Start 50%->0%
4) set 2st line trim keyframes End 50%->100%

If we are talking from other point we need to change percentage
