I know it can be done on a straight line, but I don&#8217;t see any option for a curved line.</p>

As you suggested, an adjustment layer with two masks.  The inner mask set to subtract and the outer mask to intersect.  Then using turbulent displace effect.  Just have to play with the settings to get the desired look, evolution is necessary.  Here is my result:</p>
