<p>Plus, what Joe said. He obviously has experience with this, so even with the upgraded MBP you may need to use proxy or optimized media (i.e. ProRes) anyway.</p>

It&#8217;s solid software with a lot of features and it does a great job.</p>
<p>You can download CCC as a fully functioning 30-day trial and decide if you like it or not.</p>

<p>Yes you can dedicate a portion of an external drive to a bootable clone. In fact you can have HFS+ and APFS volumes on one drive. I currently have that setup on one of my drives at home.</p>
