Thanks Graham for the recommendation, I’m not too familiar with subtitling software so I’ll check out the NewBlue Titler Pro free trial.

Thanks for the comment – I’ve just tried playing around with bézier masks and I couldn’t quite find a way to automate the size of the mask depending on the length of the subtitle text.

There seems to be a ‘background’ option for titles/text but sadly this seems to add a background to the whole image, perhaps an oversight? Below image shows a black background with the opacity dropped. Again, this can be masked as a workaround but again a very manual process if working with hundreds of subtitles.

At this point my main two considerations would be either:

    • A custom script that could be run within Vegas Pro to recognise any instances of text, measure the length in pixels, add the background and apply a mask varying in size depending on the text length plus a border width; or

    • Instead of using Vegas Pro for this purpose, using a third-party subtitling software that has this background feature built in.

I’ll continue investigating but I would be very grateful for any further insight here – it’s just surprising that this feature is not already available in Vegas Pro.

Hi there! Thanks for the reply, my apologies I found a solution a couple of days ago.

I spent some time experimenting with different FX and found the colour corrector (secondary) was perfect for this.
