Thanks for the comment – I’ve just tried playing around with bézier masks and I couldn’t quite find a way to automate the size of the mask depending on the length of the subtitle text.
There seems to be a ‘background’ option for titles/text but sadly this seems to add a background to the whole image, perhaps an oversight? Below image shows a black background with the opacity dropped. Again, this can be masked as a workaround but again a very manual process if working with hundreds of subtitles.
At this point my main two considerations would be either:
• A custom script that could be run within Vegas Pro to recognise any instances of text, measure the length in pixels, add the background and apply a mask varying in size depending on the text length plus a border width; or
• Instead of using Vegas Pro for this purpose, using a third-party subtitling software that has this background feature built in.
I’ll continue investigating but I would be very grateful for any further insight here – it’s just surprising that this feature is not already available in Vegas Pro.
