Thanks very much for the input. Based on this, and some other conversations, it sounds like making proxies makes things easier, and is the “better safe than sorry” option.

I’m working on developing a workflow and project file structure for someone. They’re shooting 30+ consecutive hours of footage at 4K (possibly 8K), converting all of the camera originals to 4K ProResHQ, and then working from the ProRes files. They’ll be editing in Premiere, on a reasonably new Mac Studio.

Would they need to also create proxies…
