Seemingly stray beams of light, as mentioned above, can add “pop” and interest through implying, rather than literally depicting, people and objects.
Rake lights across backgrounds to accentuate texture.
Color is your friend – as long as you don’t overdo things.
Some amount of “uplighting” is classic horror-noir stuff. Again, don’t overdo it.
